South-West from U.M. by Public Transport
The metrorail goes no further than Dadeland South. Bus routes going
in that direction start at South Miami metrorail station or at
Dadeland South metrorail station. There is nothing that goes from
U.M. further south than the metrorail in one journey. Busses are
not very frequent at all.
In this map, the metrorail is shown as a blue line, with the
four local stops as blue blobs. DS = Dadeland South, DN = Dadeland
North, SM = South Miami, UM = University. Metrorail trains are
quite frequent for most of the day, far more reliable than busses.
The red letters indicate places that a person might want to get to.
The area around points C, F, and D is shown in an enlargement below the main map.
This was originally written in September 2005. I have now (October 2013) updated it
to take account of the things that have since disappeared.
- A = Intersection of Red Road (57th Ave) and Sunset Drive (72nd St).
There is a big Barnes and Noble bookshop, a load of pricey clothes and tourist-trap
type shops, and some restaurants.
- B = Just N.W. of the Dadeland North metrorail station.
There is a Target, Best Buy, Sports Authority, and Bed Bath & Beyond.
(This is NOT Dadeland Mall, but a separate more useful structure).
- C = Just W. of Dadeland South metrorail station, on S. Dadeland Blvd and Datran Blvd.
There is a big Publix supermarket.
- D = Just across US1 from Dadeland South metrorail station.
(gone now: There was a biggish Borders bookshop.)
Back on the metrorail side of US1 is the popular Shorty's barbecue place.
- E = Approximately 1 mile further South down US1 from Dadeland South
metrorail station. It is a difficult walk because they do not really
take account of pedestrians at all, but you could spend a very long time waiting for a bus.
There is a big (gone now: K-Mart, being replaced by yet another Target), and a small Winn Dixie supermarket.
- F = From Dadeland South metrorail station, go North to Kendall Drive (88th St),
then go West under the overpass. Only Kendall Drive goes under the overpass, other roads
do not go through. Watch out for maniacs entering and exitting the expressway.
There is a (gone now: Circuit City), A (gone now: Barnes and Noble bookshop), and a Guitar Centre.
