Useful Downloadable Software

Telnet

Telnet is needed if you want to connect to a serious computer (such as rabbit) and use it, from a PC.

The version of telnet that I use is called CRT, and you can download a free evaluation copy from Van Dyke technologies inc, by Clicking Here. If you prefer something else, there are plenty of other telnets out there; go to the TuCows if your favourite search engine comes up blank. The telnet that comes for free with windows sort of works, but is very basic.

FTP

FTP is needed if you want to transfer files between computers over the internet. This is important for keeping safe copies of your work.

The version of FTP that I use is called WS-FTP, and you can download a free evaluation copy by Clicking Here. If you prefer something else, there are plenty of other ftps out there; go to the TuCows if your favourite search engine comes up blank. The ftp that comes for free with windows sort of works, but is very basic.

XWindows Client

XWindows is the graphics system used by unix systems like rabbit. If you want to use the graphics system, you need an XWindows client on your PC.

The XWindows client that I use is called XWin-Pro, and you can download a free evaluation copy from Labtam Finland Ltd Clicking Here. If you prefer something else, there are a few others out there; go to the TuCows if your favourite search engine comes up blank. There is no XWindows client that comes for free with windows.

C++ Compiler

You need a compiler to run your C++ programs. If you do all your work on rabbit, there is already a compiler there, so you need nothing extra. If you want to work on your own PC, and haven't already got a compiler, you need to get one.

C++ compilers are usually expensive and often unreliable, but there is a good one absolutely free (not just an evaluation copy) for PCs that you can download from Gnu by Clicking Here.
