To get the Windows 10 product key, visit the
University of Miami software
webpage and follow the instructions: http://it.miami.edu/a-z-listing/microsoft-windows/index.html
After you have the product key, download the
Windows 10 iso
from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO
Download the most up to date VirtualBox version: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Update the program.
Apple computers: click the VirtualBox dropdown menu next to the apple logo and then click "Check for Updates".
A step has been left out of these instructions, you will have to read some terms and conditions; your T.A.
will guide you.
Create a Windows 10 virtual machine with at least 2GB of RAM, 1GHz processor and 28 GB of dynamically allocated storage(.vdi).
I recommend using two or more CPU cores and 4GB of ram.
Run the windows 10 iso and do not input a product key, windows won't recognize it. Click the "I don't have a product key" button.
After you have windows 10 installed, go to Settings > Update & security > Activation and click "Change Product Key".
Enter the product key and wait for windows to activate. This step might take 10 minutes.
After that is done, shut down Windows 10 and plug in the USB.
Open the VirtualBox launcher and select the Windows 10 virtual machine (do not start the machine). Click settings and go to Ports > USB. Make sure that both the "Enable USB Controller" and the "USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller" boxes are checked.
In that same menu, on the bottom right, there should be a button to add a USB. Click it and select the Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 or any other USB you want to connect to the virtual machine.
Run the virtual machine and sign in to Windows.
If it does not let you start the virtual machine (giving you an error message) make sure that you have the extension pack dowloaded.
(Optional): To enable full screen mode, select the "Devices" drop down menu (near the apple logo for Apple computers), click the "Insert Guest Additions CD image..." button and install the additions.
Unplug and replug the USB
The USB should now be recognized.
Continue with your installation of Visual Studios.
