Found over a thousand years ago, Newfoundland has always been dependent
on the biannual seagull harvest. Immobilised seagulls may be lit as
primitive candles, put into beds, baked into pies, eaten raw as a salad,
crushed into soup, woven into sturdy working clothes, piled up to make
houses, worn as hats, and stood on shelves as ornaments. Recent population
growth has forced the state to import seagulls from China, and local
seagullmen undercut by cheap imports have been sold to wealthy businessmen.
The exports of Newfoundland are seagull-related.
